Youth

We welcome all those from the very young all the way up to building age. Many schools now require students to complete community service before they are allowed to graduate. Most churches promote faith in action type activities for their teenage youth as well. Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County would love to have these students help us.

Ages 5-7

• Make a welcome basket for the new homeowners and sing a song at dedication
• Stock the pantry for the new families.
• Draw greeting cards to be sold as fundraisers
• Construct house banks as a fundraising tool
• Draw pictures and choose twelve to make a fundraising calendar

Ages 7-10

• Draw messages or blessings on 2x4's before the house is framed
• Landscape, learn about the local environment and plant environmentally friendly trees and gardens
• Make wooden key holders, picture frames or doorstops from scraps on site
• Coordinate a birthday gift project for partner family children

Ages 10-12

• Speak to fellow classmates about the mission of Habitat with the help of a local campus chapter or homeowner family
• Construct and paint window boxes to be used as housewarming gifts or as fundraising items
• Help clear the construction site of debris before or after construction.
• Design a T-Shirt to be sold at a Habitat event
• Help fold or stuff newsletters or mailings

Ages 12-15

• Learn about another country where Habitat builds, and coordinate a fundraiser to help sponsor a home there
• Paint doors and baseboards off site before they are put into the house.
• Organize a Walk-A-Thon or Ride-A-Thon near your school
• Raise money to buy a picnic table kit and build one for each homeowner

Ages 16-17

• Help build a house! Sign up online, email, or phone (734) 243-2048 for details!
• Start a Habitat campus chapter
• Tutor younger partner family children
• Clean a Habitat house before the dedication
• Talk to a partner family about how Habitat has impacted them. Write about their experience and publish one of their reflections in your local paper.
• Organize and serve meals to volunteer builders
