Youth Educational Program- In Partnership with Monroe High School

This program is made possible by a partnership with Monroe Public School District. The program description is to provide an on-the-job learning experience for the Monroe High students enrolled in the accredited class of Construction Technology and Basic Carpentry classes by building a simple, decent and affordable house within the Monroe School District. Unlike other Habitat homes built, this home will provide a building schedule that is set out to benefit the students and become part of the curriculum for students in their educational process. This unique approach will provide our youth with hands-on job site construction; learning the various skills and trades from qualified teachers, craftsmen and tradesmen. The curriculum accreditition will be of planning, scheduling, construction techniques as well as an opportunity to work on design (exterior and interior) and landscaping. Our youth will be exposed to the "'community service" aspect from start-to-finish by building the house with the family and the community to achieve the outcome of a completed house by the end of each school year. Habitat and Monroe Public Schools jointly honor the students and host a "Achievement Awards" ceremony in June. In 2009, this partnership will dedicate it's fourth house to a family in need, with 72 students benefiting from this partnership. The students may also qualify for college credits in the construction career field.
